Hello From The Winter Friends Owl!!

Promoting the Winter Friends campaign on behalf of Leeds City Council.

The aim is to reduce cold weather related illness and excess winter deaths which remains a concern for Leeds. This will be tackled through the Winter Friends campaign which provides a network for sharing assets and resources and enables organisations and professionals to signpost vulnerable older people to the right services for them.

Linking in with Public Health England’s message of staying well this Winter and supporting LCC’s ambition of being the best city to grow old in, we focus on high impact interventions such as promoting flu vaccinations, increasing medicine uptake, keeping warm and eating well. The campaign also tackles issues such as fuel poverty and social isolation whereby Winter friends can provide a vital lifeline to people over Winter. (More than 37,000 older people are believed to experience social isolation in Leeds!)  We also offer support for people managing long term conditions during the cold months.

Becoming a Winter friend provides free access to information and promotional literature from the Public Health resource centre, free electronic training, as well as free workshops which you feel could be beneficial for your organisation/network of staff. We have plenty of free new promotional material including winter wellbeing checklists, thermometer cards, prompt cards and the shiny new owl badges which have proven to be effective in raising awareness of public health messages. To access these resources you must complete the short online training or request a 30 minute workshop to be delivered by us.  (please note: workshop sessions must be a minimum of 10).

To register your interest in becoming a winter friend please contact myself or agefriendly@leeds.gov.uk. Alternatively, if you feel you know of any organisations/staff networks which could benefit from becoming a Winter Friend please feel free to forward this email on.

Many thanks and #STAYWELLTHISWINTER,
