Northern School Of Contemporary Dance

Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) offers dance classes for people of all ages.

Classes include: beginners, improvers and advanced adult, youth and children’s contemporary dance, and a creative class for adults with learning disabilities and their carers. There are a number of bursaries available for free classes to unwaged Chapeltown and Harehills residents.

Technique, Choreography and Performance
Monday 6.30 – 8.30pm
Designed for participants who have previous experience and a good understanding of dance, this two hour class, led by dance artist Donald Edwards, features physical and challenging movement. The class consists of one hour of contemporary dance technique and one hour of choreography/creative work. Participants work with Donald to create a piece to be performed at the Riley Theatre at NSCD (taking part in the performance/sharing is optional).

Improvers / Advanced Contemporary Technique
Tuesday 6.30 – 8pm
Led by Rose Chadwick, this class is designed for adults who have previous experience in dance. The course involves a range of contemporary dance techniques to develop skills such as movement memory, co-ordination, strength and flexibility. This fast-paced class involves challenging and physical movement concepts.

Beginners Contemporary Technique
Wednesday 6.30 – 8pm
This course provides an introduction to the basic principles of contemporary dance technique and is suitable for adults who have little or no previous dance experience. Led by Amanda Lewis, participants experience a range of techniques to develop skills such as alignment, articulation of the body and shifting of weight.

Creative Dance
Wednesday 6.30 – 8pm
This course provides the opportunity for adults with learning disabilities and their carers to share and develop creative skills through participation in dance workshops. This session is led by Jess Blackbond and is free of charge.

Zumba®
Thursday 6.30 – 7.30pm
Zumba® is an easy-to-follow, calorie-burning dance fitness class. Delivered by De-Napoli Clarke, the class involves dance and aerobic elements and incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo and martial arts.

De-TURF Strike Fitness
Thursday 7.45 – 8.45pm
This new fitness class provides a full body work out. Led by dance artist De-Napoli Clarke, the movement is fast paced and energetic, based on self-defence skills. The training concept focuses on agility, weight loss, improving fitness levels and relieving stress.
