The six Leeds-based Cultural organisations behind the two-year Young at Arts project are inviting elders and young people to two days of creative workshops and oral history research in Chapeltown.

Anyone who can remember the legendary Blues Parties and sound system culture of the late seventies and early eighties is welcome to come and share their memories.

And anyone who’s not that old – or missed out at the time – can come and find out all about them. The group will document and re-imagine some of the unique cultural mix and DIY community ethic that existed at the height of the Blues.

Young people are invited to a session of oral history training on Friday 1 September, 9.30am (10 places available) before the workshop.

Up to thirty places are available, and the group will share the work they produce in a short performance on Saturday 9 September at Chapeltown Arts’ Carnival Word Junction (The Reginald Centre, Chapeltown Road).

The two-day workshop will be led by poet and spoken-word artist Sai Murray and dance artist Akeim Toussaint Buck.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both workshop days.

This is the final event of the two-year Young at Arts programme, which has been tackling social isolation among older adults in Leeds through engagement with arts and culture.

Young at Arts has been delivered by a partnership of Leeds Grand Theatre & City Varieties, Northern Ballet, Opera North, Phoenix Dance Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse & Yorkshire Dance.

Places in the workshops are free but booking in advance is essential: call 0113 243 8765
