Yorkshire Dance, the Leeds-based dance development agency for the region, recently launched its SPIRIT OF JUNCTURE campaign, raising funds to stage exceptional dance performances featuring the talents of local people of all ages and abilities during Yorkshire Dance’s Juncture festival this October.
Everyone, anywhere, is invited to join the company, and donate to the campaign, at the next fundraising event – a 24 Dance Hour Relay at Yorkshire Dance’s home on Quarry Hill in central Leeds.
Three energetic members of Yorkshire Dance staff – Artistic Director Wieke Eringa, Programmes Director Hannah Robertshaw and Creative Projects Manager Kirsty Redhead – are inviting sponsors to back them as they hand the dance-relay between them. Donations can be made online at localgiving.org/appeal/spiritofjuncture and in person at Yorkshire Dance.
Wieke, Hannah and Kirsty will be joined by a range of professional dance artists, young people and their families and, they hope, you, to keep the building jumping from 5pm on Friday 1 July until 5pm the next day.
Timed to coincide with the Yorkshire Festival’s Big Disco, the 24-Hour Dance Relay will feature a range of events, starting with a family-friendly silent disco, in which the disco-goers dance to their own choice of music through headphones, and an adults-only silent disco from 9pm until 1am.
From then until 9am a number of dance artists associated with Yorkshire Dance are offering a range of workshops for the most nocturnal of dance-fans.
Rachael O’Neill leads a creative exploration into how the mental state of post-midnight dancers influences how they dance from 1am until 4am, Tal Weinstein invites you to re-enact your favourite dance films from 4am until 5am and award-winning choreographer Jamaal Burkmar takes over until 5.45am with a session of improvisation to a gripping soundtrack of his favourite music.
As dawn breaks, three more workshops offer creative tasks exploring what it means to embody someone else’s characteristics and personality, yoga and an hour of playful movement games promising “bliss and relaxation.” And all this before breakfast.
Throughout Saturday morning, the young people aged 0-14 who take part in weekly dance classes will be joined in their studios by Kirsty Redhead, who will also be entertaining their parents in the foyer. The afternoon ends with a second family-friendly silent disco and, from 4pm until 5pm, the grand finale of the Bad Dancing Hour – a chance to take part in some of the most legendary, most loved cheesy dance routines from the last forty years.
Funds raised from ticket sales and donations will enable Yorkshire Dance to bring dance makers including Swedish
artist Sara Lindström, internationally renowned Yorkshire choreographer Lucy Suggate, London-based choreographer Nicola Conibere and ‘independent conceptual dance outfit’ immigrants and animals to take part in the Juncture festival in October, working with 75 members of the public to stage dance and film works at Yorkshire Dance and other venues around Leeds.
This is the third time that Yorkshire Dance has staged Juncture (27-30 October 2016), a festival of contemporary dance. Its curator this year is artist Gillie Kleiman, who describes the unusual, innovative performances seen all too rarely in the region as, “cool, bold and uncompromising, by wicked women artists.”
