Yorkshire Dance is inviting anyone aged 55+ from across Leeds to bring a dish they’ve made, grown or bought to add to a delicious cold buffet. Then sit back and enjoy an amazing afternoon’s entertainment.

Award-winning dance company, Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, will transform Left Bank into a restaurant for May Contain Food, May Contain You, a playful mix of dances, songs and humorous monologues.

Food’s certainly on the menu, as the show includes amuse-bouches and Luca Silvestrini himself baking a scrumptious sticky ginger pudding for everyone to share.

The day will also feature two performances by participants in other Young at Arts Projects. Food for Thought is a five-month partnership project with Armley Junk-tion Café, in which poet Christian Watson has worked with a dozen participants, exploring their personal histories through their memories of sharing food with others, and creating with them a moving, often hilarious script.

Leeds-based poet and musician Peter Spafford has been working with various men’s groups around the city, talking about what the word ‘home’ means to them. He has helped them to turn some of their memories into a 10-minute performance called Home.

The afternoon will culminate in a dance for everyone to join.

Hannah Robertshaw, Programmes Director of Yorkshire Dance, who oversees Young at Arts, says, “This event celebrates the past two years of our Young at Arts project in which we’ve worked with over 500 older people in the city. We are bringing people together to eat, laugh and see some wonderful performances from community members and professionals.

“Young at Arts has used dance, music and theatre to create social events and projects with the aim to bring people together who may be feeling lonely or isolated. We hope that this final Weekend of Wonder helps unite everyone in a joyful and fun food extravaganza!”

Although Food, Glorious Food is targeted at people over the age of 55, guests are encouraged to bring their younger family and friends with them – everyone is welcome to share in the fun.

Food, Glorious Food is delivered by Yorkshire Dance as part of Young At Arts.

Young at Arts is a 2-year project commissioned by Leeds Older People’s Forum and delivered by Leeds Education Arts Forum (LEAF), a partnership of Leeds Grand Theatre & City Varieties, Northern Ballet, Opera North, Phoenix Dance Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse & Yorkshire Dance.

Young at Arts is just one strand of Time to Shine, a 6-year programme launched by Leeds Older People’s Forum and funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better.

Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better is a new programme that aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness amongst older people (50+). Leeds is one of the 15 Ageing Better areas, selected from an original 100. The project has received funding of approximately £6m and will reach at least 15,000 older people in the city.
